Our History

Situated on the Otago Peninsula, Portobello is the principal settlement for the Peninsula’s farms. The village takes its name from that of early settler Walter Christie’s house and his birthplace.

Only a short distance from the bustle of Dunedin you’ll find incredible food, coffee and a rare slice of tranquillity at the 1908 Café in Portobello.

For more than 20 years the 1908 has been providing lunches and dinners made with ingredients carefully sourced from local suppliers. We offer appetising, traditional New Zealand fare and flavours, catering for meat-eaters, vegetarians and vegans alike. If you have any other dietary needs, just let us know and we’ll do our best to oblige.

All our dishes are prepared to a consistent high standard of taste and presentation, using the best of fresh local and seasonal produce. And all complemented by our range of beers and wines.

During the warmer months, we can, if you wish, serve you in the shade of umbrellas in our garden courtyard. In the colder months, after after you’ve soaked up the heat from our open fire or restored coal range, we can provide you with a nightcap or coffee in our intimate lounge area,.
